Medicare is health insurance for people 65 or older, or under 65 with certain disabilities. You have choices on how you get your health and prescription drug coverage. If you have original Medicare Part A (Hospital), and Medicare Part B (doctors and outpatient care). You may want to consider:

Medicare Supplement – also called a Medi-gap policy. It is private health insurance that helps pay the some of the costs that Medicare doesn’t cover. Policies must follow state and Federal laws and are standardized.

Medicare Advantage Plans – (like an HMO or PPO). These plans are run by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They provide your Part A and Part B coverage (and in most cases Part D; prescription drug coverage). Costs (some as low as a zero premium) and co-pays vary per plan.

Part D – Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage. Sometimes called PDP’s. Each plan has a formulary list of covered drugs.

There are certain CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) rules for enrollment periods. Such as guaranteed issue periods, open enrollment periods, and special election periods.
